Frequently Asked Questions

Are your trips safe?

Safety is our number one priority for our outdoor adventure programs. If you have concerns about specific safety information, be sure to check out our safety policies and procedures page.

What are the other students like?

Our students are all outstanding teens from all over the United States. OWLS places a strong emphasis on leadership and creating a supportive, positive social environment, and our students reflect that.

What do I need to bring?

OWLS provides everything you need for the activities on your trip. We can even provide you with a backpack, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat, though we do have rental fees.

You do, however, need to bring a duffel bag with clothes and toiletries. To get a better idea of what you'll need to bring, you can access the trip-specific packing list on this website by visiting the page specific to you adventure and scrolling down.

How do I choose a trip?

We have numerous trips available based on different types of outdoor activities, and a one-week program for those interested in trying one of our extended trips in the future. Be sure to look at all of our adventures under our Adventures tab to see which is right for you.

How are your instructors trained?

OWLS is very proud of its instructors! Prior to the beginning of our trips, our instructors go through an extensive two week training process specific to our programs. They are also trained in first aid and as Wilderness First Responders.

I’m nervous about flying alone.

Being nervous about flying is completely normal, and we understand that it can be a little uncomfortable, especially if it's your first time. We can assure you, though, that you are in good hands. Our instructors meet students at their gate, and we constantly check for flight delays and any other travel obstacles to keep you informed on the day you are flying. We make traveling to and from your outdoor adventure program as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Can I contact my child during their trip?

Unfortunately due to the nature and goals of our programs we do not allow technology in our base or on our trips. But in case of an emergency, all instructors have their cell phones and each trip has a satellite phone. Students or parents may be contacted in the event of an emergency but phone calls for leisure are strictly prohibited.

How long has OWLS been in business?

OWLS is just starting out with its first summer in 2015! We may not have a long history as a company, but each of our employees brings with them years of wilderness experience and we have tons of experience operating teen wilderness adventures. Visit our About Us page to learn more.

Is OWLS licensed and permitted?

Yes. We travel, camp, and recreate in licensed areas or use the best outfitters available.

I’m enrolled – now what?

First, let us say how happy we are that you're going to be spending an amazing summer with OWLS! Now that you've enrolled, check out our Forms and Information page to download and complete all the appropriate paperwork.
